I'm probably done with the OZ series after this book. Although I felt it was better than the first, it's still just an odd little book without much substance, cohesiveness or reason. I wanted the series to be like "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." It's much less meaningful or clever as that series and about as silly as the original "Alice in Wonderland". Such a shame.
Again a great story of oz. Growing up I never knew there were a lot more stories about oz. Good writing, would have loved some drawings in the book about how the weird animals would have looked like. Good characters and also a good read for grown ups.
An enjoyable instalment in the oz series. Not as fun as the first one but still a very good one. Didn't know there was so many books I. The oz series, but I'm having fun reading them!
- I didn't love this one as much as the first book, but it was still very enjoyable.
- I love the classic characters the best, but the new characters were fun. I missed Dorothy, but I liked getting to know Tip and his friends.
- I love Baum's simple writing style. He is a great storyteller. The story is very straightforward without much fluff.
- The ending is quite surprising. I don't think anyone could see it coming.
- I love the world that Baum created. Oz is awesome! I want to visit.

Everyone in this book hates the guy who makes puns and that is hilarious
I started reading this series with my son when he turned 4. We'd just started reading chapter books and I was looking for great stories without the presence of annoying pop culture. The Oz books were recommended by a trusted friend and I was skeptical at first, especially at his age, but the first book is so much better than the movie, and each subsequent book has been better than the last. After checking a couple different versions out from the library we now make sure to always get the books with the original illustrations by John R. Neill (the Dover 1980s and 90s reprints are the best). I don't know what we'll do when we reach the end of the series!
Für mich hatte die Fortsetzung nicht mehr viel vom Zauber des ersten Buches. Man kann ein paar schöne Zitate finden, aber die Handlung plätschert einfach zu belanglos nur so vor sich hin.
This book was alright. I didn't like it as well as the first book, and feel somewhat conflicted about gender conflict that seems to be prevalent in this one, i.e. women take over Emerald City because a female ruler has never been in the Emerald City, yet they do so with knitting needles (?), and everyone, including the dumb Scarecrow, call these women "girls" and tell them to "go home to your mothers" and stop this silliness. Pfft. I also wasn't a fan of Tip, who was pretty much a bratty boy bossing people about.
But I will not be thwarted! I read onward in the series!
