2.5 stars I think this book would be much more entertaining to younger children. It's ok for adults and I'm glad I read it, since I've never read any of the Oz books, but I do think the series suffers in comparison to the Harry Potter universe.
Man, the Oz books are so weird! I was dubious about General Jinjur's army, but slightly mollified by the fact that it was overthrown by another entirely female army. The gender politics of the book were still dodgy, but what d'you expect. I totally did not see the ending coming! I'd vaguely remembered Ozma but not her origin story.

It was a bit of a weird read. This book exists in a strange place between trying to be feminist and some internalized misogyny.
There were some amusing quotes but the ending left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not trans, so I can't say much about it and maybe I'm way off, but the ending didnt sit well with me, mostly Glinda.
Baby Ozma was transformed into a boy and raised as Tip. At the end they want to turn them back. Tip doesnt want to, so Glinda pretty much says 'You will be a girl and you will like it otherwise it would be a lie', and 'only evil people know how to change others genders/sex'. And then Tip agrees to give it a chance and turn back if they dont like it. It still felt to me like Glinda was calling being trans evil and lies.

Not as well known as the first but still written in a similar way. Jack is a fun character in his naivete but he seems to be a rehash of the scarecrow before he was given brains. It took me some time to finish this one and I'm not sure I'll want to continue the series after this.

What makes this book so special is all the curious characters, and the many magical enchantments that occur along the way. In addition to the Tin Woodman, who is now nickel-plated, and His Majesty the Scarecrow, we have Jack Pumpkinhead, the Sawhorse, H.M. Wogglebug, T.E., the Gump, and a human boy named Tip. Their adventures are fantastic and fun without a dull moment. This book even touches on a bit of feminism - some rather radical ideas for 1904. And last, but not least, Oz's true ruler comes to throne in a surprising revelation. One of the best.
