Wow!!! I was hooked from the start. The tension and conflict in this books was incredible - and the twists and turns at the end?! I’m amazed, I haven’t enjoyed a book this much in a while.

What a strong sequel! Definitely no second book syndrome here.

Kiva is pretty much thrown from the frying pan and into the fire, she’s managed to escape prison…but is torn between choosing her family or love. The angst and stress Kiva feels really comes on strong whilst reading, particularly in those last few chapters!! And what a cliffhanger it is!

After reading some of the 3 star and below reviews, I can definitely agree with some of what is said. The Kiva in this book is different from the Kiva in book 1, which is to be expected, but her character’s growth was not executed that well (I can even agree it wasn’t really “growth” we saw rather than change). Jaren becomes an even bigger Gary Stu, and damn it if I don’t hate myself for liking him.
This book was a *lot* more predictable than book 1. Kiva being found out by Jaren was clearly inevitable. Kiva choosing against her sister/family’s goals was inevitable. Mirryn seemed “not right” to me as well, so I’m sure other readers had that sense too. So easy to see coming.
Also, the fact that Kiva kept trusting her sister after she was so “sus,” as the kids say lol, was really kind of unbelievable, which goes back to what I mentioned before.
The fact that Zuleeka has magic abilities as well just seemed to be the “easy way to go.” Only Kiva and Zuleeka and their mom had magic abilities but it skipped their brothers? Hmph.

This all being said…despite some too-perfect or annoying characters and too much predictability, it was very hard for me to stop reading. I remained invested, like even though I figured what would happen I still wanted to read its execution. The author has solid writing skills, in my opinion. I’m grabbing the 3rd book now and am looking forward to delving in.

ok so like it is understandable how naive Kiva is, considering she’s only 17 and has been in a death prison since she was 7, but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t an annoying ass POV to follow through a novel. quite a bit of the main plot twist was literally caused because she can’t keep even 1 secret like GIRL ……. I like the world a lot though lol and I did finish it so there’s that

This was so good! Even better than the first one! So much happened, adventure, romance, mystery, betrayal, magic. I loved getting to know some of the characters better like Caldon and I absolutely loved the family dynamic! I didn't guess loads of the reveals and I am going straight onto book 3 with no gap, I cannot wait to find out what happens next.
