My biggest gripe with this book is with the characters. Lo practically screams "I'm not like other girls" which only makes her obsession with Freya more baffling seeing as she is everything Lo seems to hate. I feel like all the characters fascination with Freya wasn't at all earned. I feel this book would have been miles more compelling (and believable) if she wasn't such a cookie cutter narcissist villain. The book tries to establish her as "complicated" but she really isn't. Like I get that toxic relationships exist but this book kind of oversimplifies the whole issue entirely.
Other issues: predictable plot and twists, excessive telling instead of showing...
And not that I have a dog in the fight or anything, but I'm not really a fan of the portrayal of polyamory.
On the positive side, its a fun enough guilty-pleasure type read. Fans of Ingrid Goes West or Dare Me might find it enjoyable. The audio book was also well done.

This was a fabulous read! I was on edge trying to figure out what was going to happen and who would be the key players through the whole story. Told through multiple lenses, this a story about obsession and how far people will go when they feel desperate!
Great character development and plot! Highly recommended for all thriller fans.

I finished this crazy book in one day! At first, I found it a little difficult to get into. The writing felt odd (and I loved Harding's The Arrangement), but after a chapter, the story took off and I couldn't put this book down! Freya is awful - superficial, self-absorbed, selfish, and willing to use anyone who crosses her path. Low and Jamie both think of Freya as their best friend and absolutely adore her. For some unknown reason, Freya's charisma and allure cause Low and Jamie to forgive Freya's manipulation and cruelty. The characters in this book were awful, but so interesting and the story was riveting. This was a great thriller I couldn't put down!
Final book of the year and it was a wild ride! Not a likable character to be found, but it took me on a crazy trip and I liked the ending :)
Thank you to NetGalley and publisher Gallery/Scout Press for a free galley of The Swap in exchange for my honest review. OMG this might be the craziest, most drama-filled book I've read in a long time... and Freya, a fame-obsessed social media influencer, might just be the most seemingly normal yet deranged character ever. Or maybe that award goes to her #1 follower, Swallow aka "Low," a recent high-school graduate from a polyamorous family whose infatuation with Freya may be more than just a healthy teenage crush... can we say stalker? Or should we hand over the award to Jamie, Freya's newly-minted best friend, who after years of dissapointing attempts to have a baby, decides to give in to Freya's pestering and let loose a bit by doing some 'shrooms on a Tuesday night.... and then swapping husbands for a sexual encounter. Did I mention The Swap is chock full of drama? These three characters are all careening into one massive train wreck that you won't be able to turn away from. I don't consider this to be a thriller, but it's definitely a quick, easy-read that you won't want to put down. The perfect solution for some mindless entertainment this summer.
Freya is beautiful, charismatic and loves being the center of attention. Low knows all of this and still loves her. As a teenager who is used to being overlooked and ostracized, she loves every moment of Freya’s attention. When Freya starts spending time with a new friend, Low’s obsession takes a negative turn.
Jamie loves her new friend Freya, she’s wonderful and the perfect cure to her sadness, plus even their husbands get along. During a couples night, things take a turn when they swap partners. Now Jamie is struggling to deal with the aftermath.
Freya blew into both of their lives and quickly takes over their worlds, in this creepy thriller where it is hard to tell who is the least sane. The plot of this book kept me on edge and was truly enthralling until the very end!

This was a heck of a book that I essentially finished in 1-2 reading breaks. The story was so dark and yet I couldn't look away. There is no one to root for, here, but I had to know how the book ended. The story switches between several points of view, but this is a story of a lonely high school student (Low), a former insta-famous bored artist (Freya), and lonely in her marriage store owner who just wants a baby (Jamie). Even though I could see where the book was heading, I had to get to the ending. This is a book that's about obsession and the desire to be liked, and how both are destructive whether we give into them or not.
medium-paced
Easy to read, with just enough menace to keep you interested. Perfect summer book. Examination of friendships between women and the role ego and desperation can play.
