3.5 stars. The twist at the end wasn't exactly unexpected. It was a quick read and not boring. The short, changing narrative chapters kept you going. I'd recommend it.
These characters were a hot mess and I was here for all of it! 4.5 stars
Thank you to Gallery Books for my copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The Swap is a story full of screwed up relationships and even more screwed up people. The relationships are complicated, full of manipulation, and an extra messy love triangle.
Low was a lost girl, she was desperate for someone to feel close to and feel loved. She did not have a great home life, and Freya spotted her weaknesses and went in for the kill with her.
Freya was such an unreliable character, She was certifiable and definitely had some mental issues. I just could not like her, especially by the time she was a mother. That chick was crazy. But, I do feel like she was a believable amount of crazy.
I almost felt bad for Jamie, but I still didn't really like her. I did sympathize with her fertility struggles, and that she was taken advantage of by Freya. But I still just couldn't get over her attached and overlooking she was of Freya's awful behavior.
I did, however, feel bad for Max in all of it. I think he was manipulated and taken advantage of and just didn't have the self worth to walk away until it was too late.
That last 25% really took off in some directions that I was just not expecting. I really wasn't that crazy about the book, but it did redeem itself enough at that point for me to give it 3 stars.

If you are thinking of picking up this book because you are intrigued of the "swap" aspect, it plays a teeny tiny minor role.
I enjoy that Harding always goes out of the comfort zone and brings subjects that seem unconventional to her books but I always wish there was MORE to the hook.
This read like a slow burn psychological thriller with delicious drama that you couldn't really tear away from but the cat got out of the bag early and nothing really happened after that.
It seemed we got tidbits of the characters but not enough to bite on and the ending made me question the character profiles that were so ingrained early on.
Enjoyable but wish there was more to it.

I absolutely hated this book. Hated it. I hated the characters so much. I hated every single one of them and I hated the story. I kept waiting for it to redeem itself but it never did. I was so consumed by how much I disliked it that I almost want to give it a higher rating for its ability to elicit such a strong reaction from me. If you read the other reviews, you'll see that many people liked this book. So you have to ignore my review for this one since I am such an outlier. I clearly should have just DNF'ed it.
If it hadn't been for work, I'm pretty sure I would have finished this in a single day.
The pacing was quick, the characters interesting. The turns sometimes expected, sometimes not. The ending somewhat surprising.
If you like thrillers, if you like stories that pull you in, if you like characters that constantly make you question if they're good or not, this is a great book for you.
(Also, this is one of the best books I've ever gotten from a subscription service!)

I don't know how to process this book. So many things happened in this story. Everybody is freaking crazy. I'll come back for a review.
This wasn’t at all what I thought it would be in a good way. So much crazy going on in this book!
