Entirely unique and completely intriguing. In a strangely post-apocalyptic yet Victorian England that seems to have been consumed by heaps of possibly sentient objects, Clod Iremonger and Lucy Pennant uncover the horrible truth behind the Iremonger family's rule. Deliciously creepy and full of fun word play (for example, every member of the Iremonger family has a name that is not quite but almost a traditional name - Clod/Claude, Tummis/Thomas), it's full of atmosphere, rich world-building, and delightfully horrible villainy. While it does get a bit long in places and not all of the details of how this world operates are completely clear, tween readers who enjoy a Gothic sense of horror will eat this up.

A weird little gothic fantasy with a lot of personality. This is very unique - people are items and items are people. It's an interesting setting, the house atop the garbage heap. It's quite witty - I enjoyed the lists of things that had just one random, ridiculous thing in the middle.

This basically felt like a really dark children's story set in the dust-heaps of Dickens' Our Mutual Friend. I've loved Carey's work up until now, but this made me feel too claustrophobic or something. I don't deal well with this shade of gothic, I guess. I did like it, though, and I'll continue with the series. It's just not quite up my alley. (I'm having trouble imagining what kind of child's alley it'd be up as well?)
A strange and creepy story. I'm wondering where the rest of the series will go!
Interesting premise. I liked it well enough that I will read the sequel.
This is one of the best books I've read this year. Carey's use of language is lyrical and poetic. The words just flow together in such a wonderful way. The plot is amazing and unique and the characters are all strong and individual. I can't wait to read books 2 & 3. You will never look at garbage the same way again. I strongly recommend this series.
