A brilliantly dark take on Alice in Wonderland, a little creepy in parts but overall I absolutely loved it and am glad it's a trilogy so I can get more

Love, love, loved this!

Lewis Carroll had it all wrong! Great Great Great Granddaughter of Alice. (Yes, that Alice), Alissa will find the truth by stepping through the mirror to visit Wonderland. But this world is savage. The land as we know it was the interpretations of a preschooler and elaboration of an author. It is a curious place. Even Alissa is curious. She has a hobby of creating morbid mosaics of dead bugs and flowers to shut them up. Oh yes, she is mad. They are all mad. Generations of madness, as every female descendant of Alice, suffers the curse. Alissa aims to break the curse magic. This story was so wild and crazy and fantastically thrilling. I could not put it down.
adventurous challenging funny slow-paced

Such a great retelling to Alice in wonderland. I love the fact that this Wonderland was more dark and twisted. I completely enjoyed Howard interpretation of the character that we all grow up knowing and loving. Alyssa journey in wonderland was so full of adventures and twist, you get completely immersed in this world. So you might ask yourself if you loved it so much why the 4 stars missy? Well dear friend as twisted as this world was, the storyline is 4 times more confusing. I had to re read a lot passage and pages to grasp key elements and plot twist in the story. I felt that certain things could had been explained a little bit better, it would had aid the reader lot. Besides that great story with very unexpected turn of events.

This story follows a girl, named Alyssa, whose great-great-great-grandmother was the very person who inspired the Alice in Wonderland tales by Lewis Carroll. Alyssa can hear whispers of bugs and flowers, like her mother. Like all the women in her family who came before her, since Alice. The voices have driven her mother, Alison, to an asylum. Alyssa comes to believe that her family is cursed, and falls down the rabbit hole, like Alice had 75 years before, to undo the family curse.

THIS IS WHERE I LOSE MY SHIT!
I love fairy tale adaptations in books.
They make my heart sing.

First off, right from the get-go there is so much tension between Alyssa and Jeb. You just knew that they'd be some sort of weird thing. I just didn't know how any of that would pan out.

THERE IS SO MUCH TEEN ANGST WITH ALYSSA.
Putting in colored extensions, putting on heavy makeup.. just to see her mother. I mean, I get you don't wanna look like her. But really? Just because you look like your mother, doesn't mean you'll end up in an asylum as well. As long as you keep your shit quiet, like you have been.. you should totally be fine.

BUT OF COURSE YOU DON'T!
YOU SPILL THE BEANS TO YOUR MOTHER!
Yo' mama can't handle that shit!
But... at least your mom's break down leads you to some more clues!
So, there's that.

So back to Jeb...
At first, I didn't really know how I felt about him joining Al in Wonderland. I felt like it was kind of a back and forth thing for me. Sometimes I felt as though he really wasn't needed at all.. but then, there were also times where the story fit well with him in it. BUT THEN THE THING! At the very end, Al using her wish to never let him in the door that night. Ugh. It really made me feel as though all that back and forth with them being mad at each other was kinda a waste. I realise that it still added greatly to the story. But still butthurt. JEB DOESN'T GET TO REMEMBER THAT STUFF! I was really glad he did sort of remember, through the dreams. I haven't read Unhinged yet, so I'm wondering if Al will end up telling him about it.

Morpheous
Ugh. I still don't know how I feel about him! His character had a lot to him. I think, overall, I do like him. He wasn't a good guy, really.. but I loved how the story ended with him. All of the lies throughout the story were a bit confusing. There was constantly something else. It did help answer my questions, though.

I love that in the end, Alyssa is able to save her mother.
It was kinda a worry I had the entire book, that something would happen, and she still wouldn't be able to come home. THANK GOD FOR THAT! I would have been upset if all that happened basically for nothing.
(:

Overall, a really good read.
Going to read the next in the series soon!
If you wanna talk about it, check out my tumblr!

I like “twisted fairytales” but this was just weird.

My actual problem was that I felt main relationship was gross. Jeb is grossly over possessive of her and very useless but seems to think he knows what to do. Also he is definitely just using the “mean” girl who has her own trama since he thinks Alyssa is out of his league or whatever.

“I didn’t want to unload my baggage on a girl as sweet as you” actual quote by Jeb - so I dated another girl that’s been through a lot being neglected by her father even though because we are best friends you are already aware of my baggage.

Also Morpheus was grossly possessive over her too which is extra considering this is based on time from when she was a child.

Won’t plan on reading the others. But the creepy twist on wonderland had so much potential but the main characters ruined it for me.
