This was...dense. Definitely for someone in the nutrition field with a more robust knowledge than the average person. Still, informative and expansive.
A founder in te ms of approach to nutrition, and more generally a very good approach to “real science”: John Yudkin writes extremely clearly and pedogagically, even entertainingly, explaining how studies work, what is objective knowledge, what are deductions, why he leans this way or that... A great bridge between pure research results and popular science.
And gives an excellent understanding on the whole saga of sugar and nutrition research, and why things aren’t as clear-cut as we may think...

Because this is such a hot topic I picked this up at the library thinking it was relatively new, but no - it was published over 40 years ago. If only we'd listened to him then! Interesting Guardian piece on it here: http://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/apr/07/the-sugar-conspiracy-robert-lustig-john-yudkin
I read this book back in the day, it was extremely controversial then, and the author was persecuted for his views. I remember vividly BIG CORP doing their utmost to discredit him, and they succeeded. Image the millions of lives that this humble book would have saved if only it was taken seriously when first published. I rate this book a firm 4.2-stars, well worth the read, especially if you are pre-diabetic or diabetic type-2.
3.5 stars, actually. Much of the content in this book is dated as you would expect of the book that was published in 70s. Otherwise, this is a good book.
Such is the force behind the concept of sugar being harmful that this book embodies, that I have given up sugar instantly. This may be a fad. So, just to make sure I go on losing weight, I decided to read Pure, White, and Deadly, over and over again.
The last chapter shows a pockmarked battlefield where sugar's sacred guardians keep on belittling John Yudkin, the author. They employ sneaky tactics to relegate the author's studies to crackpot theory land.
I first heard of this book from another one; Fat Chance by Robert H. Lustig. Fat Chance is very informative. But though it's the successor to Yudkin's book, and has modern statistics at hand, Pure, White, and Deadly is the better book, by sheer force of the intellect.

The fact that this was written in the 1970s is absurd, the fact that we eat even more sugar now is worse, the book is a capsule of time and shows how quickly science does change however old mate's ego and personal hatred to other scientists really shines through. If you're going to read one book on sugar then I'd pick an updated one but this was really very interesting to see what has and has not changed.
Would have gotten a 4 if the last 20 pages were something other than the author whining about critics. That was dumb.
Yes, I did read this book while eating a DQ blizzard and yes, I did read this book while drinking a sugary coffee from Holiday. Both were delicious! I clearly have a long ways to go in my journey.

Got about 50% of the way through this one because it was a bit of a snooze fest. Dry, but useful.
