Interesting account of Burroughs' father, mostly pre-"Running with Scissors". If you're looking for a comedic memoir, this isn't it, but I think it was a better read than most others on this site thought, apparently. He did an excellent job of making his dad feel dangerous and looming, and if you're a pet lover like me, be prepared to be squeamish. Read this while my own wonderful father was in the hospital, making me appreciate him all the more.

Very different from his other books and much sadder/scarier.

Whoa . This book gripped me and didn't let go. I found this memoir to be disturbing, provocative and vivid. It's hard for me to say that I liked this book in the general sense. Can a person really say they "liked" something that so profoundly disturbed them? This memoir is based on Augusten Burroughs childhood and teenage memories of his absolutely psychotic father and his broken relationship with him, the turmoil in the household and how he coped with the daily fear of living in the same house as his father . This is such a far cry from the type of household I grew up in, I found it fascinating in a sickening way. My heart broke for Augusten again and again. There were some seriously horrible parts involving pets so be warned. Having just read Running With Scissors, which I found comical and unique, this memoir shows a darker, raw side of Augusten's life.
4 out of 5. His writing style is very vivid and draws you in, but it doesn't get a full 5 stars because I can't stand the death of pets lol. Great read. My advice is to read something very uplifting after.

Augusten has had such a crazy life. With every book I read of his, I feel like I'm getting more of the painful picture that is his life. Great book
