Relectura.

An enjoyable and well written reimagining of the last days of imperial Russia. What I found near about it was that this story Ould have happened in tandem with all of the things we know about the downfall of the Romanovs and all that followed.

The House of Special Purpose starts with Georgy remembering his past as he grieves his wife Zoya’s illness and imminent death. Alternating chapters of key moments in Georgy’s and Zoya’s lives going backwards with what led to their meeting/marriage going forward until they meet at a pivotal historical moment. John Boyne’s pacing, writing, and organization of the novel are brilliant. This imagined alternate history of the Romanov family is fascinating and believable. Reading about Russian history interspersed with a love story was great.
I really enjoyed the reading experience, regularly reading when I should have been sleeping. This is a great historical fiction pick and continues my respect and appreciation for Boyne.
If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. Very well written, heartbreaking, and completely engaging. If you're at all interested in the last Romanovs, read this book!
another heartfelt, wonderfull story by John Boyne. Thank you for the stories <3
Not a patch on 'Boy in the Stripped Pyjamas' or 'The Absolutist'. Georgy is an arrogant, selfish character of huge naivety who, Forest Gump like, turns up at major moments in Russian history. Credibility seems not to be important in this novel.
It's also very slow moving and spends a huge amount of time in Georgy and Zoya's domestic arrangements. No doubt as a contrast point after the reveal (which is not really a surprise) It's a bit overdone, though.

I absolutely loved this book. I figured out the mystery pretty quick, having read similar books in the past, but despite that, I was hooked on the story from the get-go. Boyne crafted a complete masterpiece in this story.
Anything written to do with the Romanov family calls to me from the shelf, and I am a fan of historical fiction. This was far better than I hoped for- what a beautifully written book and the structure of the plot unfolds masterfully. Seldom have I read a book that interweaves time frames as well as this one.
Since everything about this book was a happy discovery, I am not going to say anything else about it- except to advise you to read it!
This is one of those stories that will stick with me for a long time.
The author has written so many other titles across age groups. I will now go back and read some of his others.

So at page 240, I was wondering why I was reading this when I know what is going to happen.
Yeah, I even double checked the ending and then just couldn't answer my own question.
