Interesting development for Ax, deciding where his loyalties lie (with his people or with the Animorphs). And some more delving into their roles, especially with that psychic Leeran morph.

I'm not a massive fan of the Ax books and I found the story a bit lacking. It was bumped up to 3 stars because it picked up pace when they entered a 'foreign' world.

This was definitely the darkest so far when it comes to the horrors of war. At least out of the main series, Andalite Chronicles is up there too. This one was also a fantastic story

Ax novels were usually my favorite- and this presents a new idea- that our saviors are as corruptible as anyone.

Mass suicide, Andalite traitors, and secret service controllers.

This one's a bit weird - it all starts with them morphing mosquitos to acquire the DNA of a secret service guy they plan to morph and blow the lid on the whole invasion before the Yeerks do. Because the mosquito bodies are so small, they end up zapped into Zero-Space with their bodies in the middle of a battle between the Andalites and Yeerk infested, psychic Leerans. By the time they get back to their original mission and end up not going through with it, it felt a little, uh, anti-climactic I guess?

The best parts of this book is Ax's character development. After sometime now of living with humans, he's suddenly thrust back into Andalite culture and some of his biases about the superiority of his race are challenged. They're pretty arrogant and not really doing all that well in this war, actually! He'd bought into propaganda, and discovers first hand the lengths his people will go to to maintain an image of righteousness.

But. Eh. I don't love how derailed the plot went to get there and the cop out at the end.

I'm a bit torn on this one, the premise was solid, the logic was flawed, the internal struggle of Ax is interesting, the ending felt rushed, so I'm going smack in the middle here with 3-3.5 stars.  The whole idea of z-space is...a lot.  Fun concept I suppose but definitely more sci-fi heavy.  Ax's POVs are very good, especially when interacting as a human and we get more of his coming to terms with his new found family here, which is very sweet.  Again, these books deal with some very heavy themes for children's books.

Ax really becomes a part of the team in this book. Before this, he joined the cause, but still felt some distance to the Animorphs because he wanted to stay true to the laws of the Andalites. Here, he is forced to come to terms with everything that's happened, and truly pick a side; the Andalites or the Animorphs. I usually find Ax's books pretty boring as well, but I enjoyed this one.
