Can someone please explain to me how such a short book just made me feel so very satisfied? I wish I was Nancy. Her ability to just put life on pause is actually amazing. This book is so imaginative and it seems like the answer to all the other books I’ve read. The explanation of what Alice feels like after she leaves wonderland.

There are major parts of the plot that are predictable, but the reveal is still satisfying. There is just artistry in the writing. This book also does diversity in a subtle fashion. It doesn’t feel forced, yet still gives proper representation.

Overall, I’d give this 4.5/5 stars. Definitely recommend for everyone.

As someone who grew up getting run through the systems for "managing troubled teens", this book was bizarrely cathartic  and relatable, despite being fantasy. There were lines I related to on a level I was not expecting. The mystery was intriguing and the characters deeply flawed, yet lovable. The pacing was fast in a good engaging way. All around a wonderful read.

Thank you Emm for recommending me this book! I've definitely been in a bit of a reading slump (at least for physical books) and this was the perfect book to help me pick myself back up.

Every Heart a Doorway is exactly what I would want if there were a third book in the TJ Klune Cerulean Sea novels. Getting to experience a boarding school for kids who don't exactly fit into "normal" society via a new attendee was refreshing! The worldbuilding McGuire did in this small 173 page book was absolutely brilliant. I loved how unique each and every character was, and how the trauma from being separated from their special world brings them together.

Everyone's theming was really interesting! I loved Nancy and her freezing to blend in with the House of the Dead; Jack and Jill with their macabre Dracula and Frankenstein roots; Christopher and Dia de los Muertos and Sumi with her high nonsense Candyland. I loved the found family Nancy had in her fellow misunderstood classmates.

Ok, I kind of forgot the blurb had mentioned "tragedy", but I was not expecting the kids to start dropping dead like flies! I was so shocked when everyone found Sumi (I'd never expect her to die first, if at all) dead with HER HANDS MISSING!?! All the gruesome killing with strategic missing parts rapidly transformed the book for me. I started suspecting Jill after she appeared in the attic a moment later, and especially once Loriel's skeleton gave a hint to Jack.

I'm not exactly sure where the series goes from here (sounds like it might focus on different characters from this book and jump all over time-wise) but I would love to read more! This felt like the perfect book to kick-off Autumn "vides".

This was so amazing

Relectura 2020

2018
Again, I’m not sure about what to think about this. I really enjoyed the characters and how unexpected some things were but it was so short and I feel like I need more things to happen. Idk

"everyone watches for the silence of boys, everyone depends on the silence of girls"

I think the author's voice is unique and I enjoyed it a lot. It is, in my opinion, rather cerebral. The books in this series are all very short reads (around an hour and a half at most) but I do not think it detracts from the experience at all.

Some of the characters in this book fall a bit flat; having read the second book beforehand, I would argue that the "universe" this series is set in does become more developed with time, as does the author's depictions of... shall we say, Nonsensical and Logical personalities. I do not recommend reading them out of order, however.
While the second book (Down Among the Sticks and Bones) is largely given away through snippets of conversation in this book, if you already know the plot of the second book... you will probably, like me, have a quibble or two about some of the phrasing.
