The premise was *chefs kiss*. The execution was terrible. Two stars because I did want to finish it and find out who the killer was. Yes, the killer. This book is trying to be a boarding school novel, a fantasy story, a murder mystery, and more. And all in 173 pages.

The diversity was SO "tumblr checklist". A trans character! A hypersexual asian woman! An asexual! a Latino boy whose ONLY descriptor is "latino" who went to a Day of the Dead world! It was less "my characters are diverse as a reflection of the real world" and more "slap a label on this character's head and pat myself on the back for being uwu inclusive!" Then I read the author's "about" that was included and ouf. She definitely sounds insufferable and like she spends a good deal of time one upping and out woke-ing people around her.

ANYWAY. This premise in an actual skilled author's hands would have been delightful. And why is our MC Nancy in such a rush to get back to a world where all she does is STAND STILL?

The categorization of other worlds was interesting and would have been something great to read about, alas.

Zvláštní, nenáročná a milá.

I'm not sure if I was an idiot in 2018, or if I just got so much more out of this book upon reread since I know more about the world and the characters. But I loved this book this time around!

This was a really cute book, and I really liked all the characters, but I feel like it could have been better had it been a full length novel. We have no back story on any of the characters, and you're supposed to feel empathy for the characters that die, but I don't because I don't know who they really are. I will continue the series, but I'm just not sure that this book lives up to the hype that BookTube has put on it. I really enjoy character driven novels, and knowing as much as I can about different characters. I just didn't get that from this book.

Surprisingly, despite the fact that this was short, I really enjoyed it. McGuire perfectly blends whimsy with creepy without going too far in either direction. It's also a perfect fall read. I'm not a big horror fan, but I think this book hits on horror tropes and style without actually being horror. It's clear that is her specialty.

This was the perfect length. If it were a little longer it would've felt ridiculous and if it were shorter it wouldn't have made sense. I did guess the murderer early on, but that didn't take away from the story. Jack was my favorite and I always love
enemy sisters where one is evil. To future GIllian reading this: haha, you're the evil sister this time.

I'm excited to read more of these, especially seeing that some pick up with existing characters and other books bring in new characters. I got X-Men vibes from this but that was probably just because it was an American school of weird kids. This book hit on many fun, quirky genre expectations in interesting ways both with the existence of the doors/portals and in the worlds themselves. My favorite was the detail from Nancy's world of eating unicorns. So true, Seanan, nobody has ever done that. How weird.
