What an absolute delight!
Ok, maybe not the murder. But everything else!
This book was so whimsical. I kept thinking how much I would have loved this when I was a teenager- I'm sure I would have designed some kooky imaginary worlds that I would have wanted to travel to.
I also think it's cool that in such a short book, especially one that is focused on fantasy world building, that they managed to include interesting representation like asexuality and being trans, especially how those things fit perfectly into the plot.
I'm definitely gonna check out the other books in this series.

'How do we get past the worst experience we've ever been in?'
'How did the guy get through Groundhog Day?'
'Help people where they are and take responsibility for yourself.'
'Have we tried that yet?'

I really enjoyed this little book! I loved hearing about all of the different worlds and how the children cope with leaving “fairyland.” I’m interested to see where the next books go!

#1698 on my to-read list. I finally completed a book from my list rather than adding a ton more!
I came across a review on ArsTechnica of a later book in the series. I read just enough of the review to decide that the series sounded interesting and added the first book to my to-read list.
Last week I picked up this book from the library and tonight I sat down to read it. Two hours later, I closed the book and sighed. I think I liked it. I know for sure that I couldn't put it down. What a story. Rather than the cardinal directions of north, south, east, and west, these other worlds had directions like Logical, Nonsense, Virtue, and Wickedness. The worlds the children traveled to were somewhere along the spectrum of these descriptors. When the children returned to their birth world, they no longer fit in with society. Could they learn to rejoin society or would they always try to get back to the world they had found?
The book was creepy and enthralling at the same time. I can't decide if I want to read the rest of the series. It was definitely mind-bendy and different from anything I've ever read before.
Note for those concerned about content - there were a couple f-words and a quick discussion of masturbation.

I was not sure what I was going to think of this series but I'm so glad I went in mostly blind! Enjoyed it a lot more than i expected to.
