Cute, but definately my least favorite so far (I read the 2nd book first, and am writing this review after having read the 4th). It's not about a door appearing with a fantasy world, which is where I think the strong point of this series lies. Interested to see if there are other books in this series that aren't door/prequel books and if I'll like those or only the fantasy ones.

Cute but a bit short, I tend to prefer longer books. Still, in such limited pages, the author manages to create beautiful, quirky and deep characters and that made me enjoy the story a lot.

A short and sweet mystery adventure with a fantasy element that makes it fun even as it’s grounded in our mundane world.

A short book for YA readers, the writing is delightful but the content, while clever fairytale nods abound, is definitely suited for a teenage audience in search of a quick read. While I do agree with the authors points in the book regarding topics like masturbation, asexuality etc., and they were handled well, commentary on such things in so short a novel must necessarily be blunt and in your face. I am not the intended audience, but I can see myself liking this more if I were back in high school. Since I am not, I will probably not read the following stories. Writing and Characters were lovely, however.

The premise of the book is so good - what happens to the children who returned from adventures in other worlds? Why did those magic portals appear to them? Will anyone believe them? The first 3/4 of the book was close to perfection. The idea of the worlds being bespoke escape and shelter for the children's trauma was so heartbreakingly good. Two of the main characters being asexual and trans was lovely queer representation. It was a strange turn in the last quarter into a murder mystery. It wasn't terrible but felt a bit abrupt. I would have liked a slower exploration of the school and friendships. Maybe this is coming up in the later books. Overall enjoyable and highly recommended for anyone who has ever felt like a stranger in their homeland.
