This is a dark, dark book - in subject matter, theme, and atmosphere. Charlie Parker and his partner, Rachel, are celebrating the christening of their daughter, Samantha, when a woman comes to the house looking for Louis. She is Louis' aunt and is looking for help as her daughter (Louis' cousin) has disappeared. It seems that a lot of young women have disappeared recently. Louis only cares about his cousin but they are drawn into something deeper. Something which might have more connections to Charlie and his past than any of them could know. The disappearance of one girl leads Charlie, Louis and Angel all the way to the ancient town of Sedlec, in the Czech Republic where something has been imprisoned for centuries.

The fifth installment of the Charlie Parker series is by far the most paranormal. That's not to say it isn't good - it is. It's just that Connolly took time to build the world and history in which the story took place.

While the story was fairly complex as the other books have been it was a bit bogged down by overlong descriptions of regions and areas which included details that had no impact on the story.

While it lengthened and slowed the book it didn't do more harm and once you get through it, largely in the first 150 pages, the story moves quickly and pays off.

If you like complex crime stories you'll like this one.

I gave it an 7.5/10 on my personal scale.

I enjoyed this book very much. Lots of twists and turns. Some of Parker’s specialness is outlined, and we meet the Fulci bros.

The book started off ok but, as the story progressed, I became increasingly confused. Here’s why:

1. The people/groups involved: who was who, who was associated with who and how/why?
2. The introduction of new characters seemingly out of nowhere - who are they, how are they relevant, how were they found so quickly.
3. How the characters (already known & those newly introduced) play a part in the story (in other words: what is their significance to the story up to now and its continuance)
4. What exactly were they looking for? Map pieces/old picture/ religious scripture??
5. How exactly did the main character learn about new aspects/people so quickly and then be able to connect the dots/meet up with new people ? To me, it seemed that we were jumping from one interaction to another. Whatever the characters learned, I didn’t/couldn’t follow
6. There were times during the book (albeit briefly) where I felt that were from 1-2 other perspectives? Why? What was the purpose?

In this book, Charlie Parker steps beyond the life of an ordinary private investigator, and into something more...
