There are many kinds of battles in ‘One Piece’. Some are fought with swords, fists, and the occasional ludicrously oversized cannon. Others are less about brute force and more about sheer force of personality. Vol. 53 gives us both, and it does so with the usual Oda flair, by which I mean absolutely no restraint whatsoever.
We finally see the aftermath of the clash between Rayleigh, Luffy, the Navy, and Kuma, and—no surprises here—things are about as calm and orderly as a tavern brawl in a town with no law and far too much alcohol. But what really makes this volume stand out isn’t just the fights; it’s Luffy himself.
You see, there’s something remarkably compelling about a character who wins people over simply by being exactly who they are—no trickery, no speeches, just pure, unwavering conviction in what they believe. And Luffy, in all his reckless, rubber-limbed, is exactly that kind of person. Which is why people end up following him into certain doom with smiles on their faces.
To be fair, I didn’t always like him. Early on, his humor felt too ridiculous for my taste (see my previous reviews. I almost DNF this series), his decisions too absurd, and yet here we are. Somewhere along the way, he earned my respect, the same way he earns the loyalty of allies and the grudging admiration of enemies. I wouldn’t just follow him into battle now, I’d row the damn boat myself. This volume is exhibit n.
I wonder if he will be able to save Ace. And if so, what does that mean for the war brewing between the Whitebeard Pirates, the Navy, and the Warlords of the Sea? I’m pretty scared.

The first chapter is really emotional as the straw hats are in way over their heads in the battle.
When Luffy is separated from the rest of the crew in the aftermath of the battle the tone shifts quickly to more lighthearted and funny. And while I do enjoy the new cast of characters, mainly having a somewhat diverse set of women, I wanted more of the emotions and found the story line to be a bit shallow.
Not my favorite volume, but it touched on a lot of plot points and powers that will be important later in the series.
