Every time I picked up this audiobook I was fully engaged in the story and in comparing it to Baltimore in the weeks after the Uprising. I couldn’t help but imagine what life would have been like back then under the dome. Jamal stole the show for me; a compelling lead read in a compelling way by Kevin R. Free. I got to the end and immediately messaged a friend to see if there was a sequel waiting for me. (Not yet!) I do think the book felt rushed. The relationships therein were constrained by its shorter length, and things felt more like a stone skipping across a pond, touching briefly on a character beat here and then here and then here again until it fell through the surface down below. Movie pacing, I might call it. But engrossing all the same!

I really liked this story. I'm hoping that based on the ending that this will be a series (?) but I can also see this as a standalone. Only taking half a star off because the relationships felt a little rushed within the story, but this is also only a 300 something page book so I can understand why it felt fast.
Growing up near Baltimore I really enjoyed the "futuristic" yet somewhat of a reality we live in spin this story has.

"It looks like something out of a really bad young adult novel that was adapted into a movie..."
This quote from a character pretty much sums up my feelings.
Advertised by School Library Journal as Black Lives Matter meets the Hunger Games, Survive the Dome takes readers on a fast-paced, action-packed ride. You can really feel the raw, unfiltered pain and anger underlying the narrative. The dystopian Dome and police brutality inside feels disturbingly closer to reality than fiction.
I wanted to like this one so much more than I did. Kosoko Jackson is one of my favorite authors, and Kevin R Free is one of my favorite narrators. The premise is both timely and intriguing, but the story feels rushed and underdeveloped. The traditional YA tropes (e.g. insta love) felt super tropey and the frequent narrative inconsistencies were really distracting.

This was such an enjoyable read. When I was younger, I wanted to write books like this: love, activism, and fighting back. I definitely recommend it!
