GODDDDD every single book in this series just got better and better. the way the story came together in the end was so satisfying and i feel like every single question i’ve had since the first book was answered. one of the best conclusions to a trilogy i’ve ever read 💕

Holy moly, this trilogy is EVERYTHING. It moved me to tears on many occasions, it made me think deeply, it made me scared of and root for the main characters at the same time. It has allegories for social movements, our human history, the potential power of oppressed people, relationships between daughters and mothers, and what it takes to survive hard political times. It is a dark, dark trilogy - there is very little smiling & laughter in these books - but at the same time there are moments of hope, stories of redemption and survival. NK Jemisin is one of the best living authors in the world. So many trilogies, particularly if the author has the room to go anywhere with the world/society/cultures/magic systems, go off the rails over time. But this one felt incredibly rewarding to finish. You could tell Jemisin planned and plotted the entire story from beginning to end. The story is intentional, sure-footed, and haunting. And the biggest reveals, in the last half of this third book, still totally shocked me, even though I spent a huge amount of time thinking about these books and trying to puzzle out the core mysteries and histories! And it's also beautiful and painful to re-read this trilogy once you've finished (or between books), because so much from the first book is illuminated once you have more pieces of the story (most particularly Hoa's and Alabaster's storylines). I cannot wait for Jemisin to plunge us into another world. I cannot recommend this trilogy more strongly -IF you can handle a solid amount of sadness, a very very difficult scene of violence in the 2nd chapter of the first novel, and if you're able to withstand not understanding everything all the time (though know that she won't leave you hanging).
