FINALLY finished this. To the very end, Jemisin captures falling, stumbling into place without it being a gotcha. Fixing the damaged, accepting the irreprable. Castrima on the move, turning to stone, growing up too fast, loving different versions of the same person. The center of the earth.

A reasonably satisfying conclusion. I think this was my least favorite of the three, though. And I think I would have liked it more if I’d savored Hoa’s flashbacks. The world building is what I was missing, but that’s on me.

My favorite part was the acknowledgements, and getting a little peek into the author’s mindset. I waited to read this one because I wasn’t ready to sit in mother-daughter conflict. I also have a mother who requires care. I also am a fraught daughter. And I just had a daughter of my own. I’m still not sure I was ready for this one. And maybe that’s why I didn’t savor it the way I did the others.

But! It was good. Worth the accolades. Worth my time. Maybe even worth a second look after some years have gone by.

I have a deep deep love for this series. For the workings of the world to be a mystery slowly revealed over time……it felt so organic that the reveals were things we were learning alongside the main characters. I’m so in awe with how this book was written.
