The book/series crescendoed into a very bold demonstration of how the erasure of Native people and the enslavement of Black people has severed our connection to the earth. Jemisin was spitting bars every paragraph. I was highlighting passages left and right during the last 30%, like I was studying a civil rights x environmental activism speech. It shows how industry and resource extraction have exploited and angered the earth. We don’t understand the earth and it doesn’t understand us, but it’s older and more powerful than we can acknowledge, and it will have its revenge. The earth will be fine.
The story also shows so many perspectives on how to put and end to the world’s exploitation. Some are hopeful, some are skeptical, and Jemisin makes us understand all. Reminded me so much of Future Ancestral Technologies.
This series spends a lot of time describing survival, and it does sorta start to get old after 3 books, I gotta say. I suppose it kinda works, in that in the orogenes’ situation, day-to-day survival in an inhospitable world was half the battle.
This one definitely makes ya think. About the intersectionality of it all. The who’s feeling what and why. But unlike the second book, this one did a much better job of actually explaining a situation’s full impact (it even seemed self aware of this need for more detailed explanations sometimes).

A bit of a confusing end, but as always the writing was so compelling and the way humanity was written was so... Accurate? Both desperate and lesser and dark but also always capable of more
Olipa hyvä lopetus hyvälle sarjalle.
Rytmiltään jotenkin vielä hitaampi kuin aikaisemmat osat. Säästelin tätä piiiitkään. Tunne- ja ihmissuhdekuvausta juuri sopivasti. Vuosikymmenen huono äiti-palkinto kuuluu ehdottomasti päähenkilölle.
