As usual, King has a good idea which gets slaughtered by the disgusting way he writes of women, girls, and sex. The more of his works I read, the more disappointed I am.

The jumping around from POV to POV to newspapers and writings of other characters telling the story was done in such a bizarre way. Like his previous books, this also included (despite being only 242 pages) descriptions of and interviews with people that really did not matter. The entire part three could've been left in the drawer as a draft and nothing more.

So all in all, not a great read.

This novel has one plot and aside from Sue Snell, I found the characters fairly one sided. We watch an utterly traumatized child breakdown.

In some ways, it feels terrifyingly akin to school shooters today with the mass of damage caused, but I also think that analogy is one noted and flat. Same with the ways in which our bad characters were portrayed. They felt one note and flat, doing exactly what you'd expect bad characters to do. Use too many slurs, cause physical violence, and think about sex.

I get why people enjoy this book and the plot. It's a unique telling of the event and the story is interesting despite the one notedness. If you want a simple horror story to lose yourself to, it's an ok choice!

Incredibly compelling story - I read it in two days! King does a good job of getting in the minds of teenage girls, and the horror is palpable. I could do without the outdated 1970s attitudes though, which does really jar with modern sensibilities.

Maybe Stephen King just isn't for me. This my 2nd book from him and at least Misery picked up. This book was just awful to me. I didn't like the way it was written. The characters were pretty dense. I don't think the storyline was well told. It just seemed pretty surface level. And just not what I expected it to be. And the subtle racism and fat phobic (maybe it was written like that because of the time period) I found unnecessary.
