Long chapters and switched between three women that made it  kind of hard to keep up since they were all a little similar. Mostly about misplaced or inappropriate sexual desires and all from straight women

This book was based on the interviews of three real women. One who is having an extra-marital affair, the other whose husband enjoys seeing her have sex with other people, and another who had a sexual relationship with her high school teacher. I was probably most interested in the last story because it was a real court case in North Dakota. While it was a honest book, it was not the most enjoyable read for me because the characters lacked substance to me.

There were parts of this book I really enjoyed. However, it felt disorganized at times. I also would get confused as the POVs changed, but I knew going into it there would be multiple POVs (considering the book is called Three Women). I found their stories to be incredibly emotional and relatable. I was especially compelled by Maggie’s story. I hope she’s been able to find peace after living through those tragedies.

I am seeing a lot of mixed reviews on this book. Most of them in the spirit that it seemed anticlimactic in content for being the product of almost a decade of research.
Personally, I found its subtlety to be what was so cathartic about it.
It is easy to find books that detail the precise and obvious ways in which women’s lives are affected by men.
It is not so easy to find books that explore the elusive, subconscious ways in which men, and their perception of us, seep into our everyday-ness. The subliminal grotesqueness of womanhood. More specifically, of daring to be a sexual being amidst this womanhood.
Reading this book felt just as claustrophobic as it did freeing. I felt uncomfortable for these women— and then realized that I actually felt uncomfortable /with/ these women.
This silent, awkward world of despair that Taddeo has created was not really created by Taddeo at all— but given a vessel to be recognized by her methodical way with words.

Oof. What an insanely, deliciously well written book! From the start I felt so swept in, so absorbed, so smitten by it all. Toddeo does such an excellent job crafting the narratives of these women’s stories together in such beautiful and heart breaking ways. I really also appreciated the way she created 3 different tones and rhythms and voices for each woman, it’s great to write well one way, it’s remarkable to write so well in three different styles.

This book is truly such a tender look at womanhood, desire, sex, and suffering. Pretty heavy on the sex details in ways that I would have maybe toned down a bit, but maybe that’s just me being a bit prudish? Anyways, this book had me reflecting, tearing up, and oozing with empathy and deep understanding.

Just excellent!
