Choctaw storyteller Tim Tingle handles fear, cruelty, and death openly and bluntly, but also gives readers lovable characters and a gentle sense of humor. A benefit of this being an #ownvoices novel: Tingle avoids defining the Choctaw Nation by their trauma, and keeps the focus on their resolve and determination to survive, their traditions and spirituality, and the strength of their community. The pace is fast! I read this in one sitting.
Minor: Animal death, Blood, Child death, Confinement, Death, Gore, Grief, Kidnapping, and Torture
This book is written for 8-12 year olds. If you have a sensitive child, I'd wait until they're on the older end of that range.
