I've been thinking for a few days about this book, which is, I suppose exactly the point. Full disclosure, I listened to this one as read by the author, which can change an interpretation. Malcolm Gladwell writes thoughtfully as usual. Sound arguments push for grace and kindness when talking with strangers. Without introducing any spoilers, I think what was troubling in the book was that it removes blame. Yes, that is the point. Yes, this was written before our current situation as a society. But right now it feels like maybe rather than remove blame, we should focus on creating a culture of responsibility for one another. These struggles detracted from the book for me. As thoughtful a writer as Gladwell is, maybe that is the point...
About gut-feeling, whistleblowers and our very fallible assumptions about how to interpret each other.

It was informative of the reality in which we exist in the United States. However a lot was left out especially cross cultural communication and norms not to mention a lack of strong critique on policing he even put audio in from and Israeli “crime analyst” and I wouldn’t say the author handled the discussion about sexual assault and rape with the utmost tact. Regardless I still had some takeaways and have greater insight into white liberals and white america in general.

After 6.5 hours I just didn't want to listen anymore. The audiobook was very well produced and the storytelling was generally very engaging. However, multiple chapters utilize horrific stories of police brutality, sexual assault, and murder to explore the theories presented and it was exhausting. There were several interesting points made but many of the cases examined were far too complex (and horrific) to truly support the ideas - the analysis ended up feeling reductive and at times insensitive and naive. It felt like the case were chosen almost for the sake of having a controversial hot take.
