A good read
I had read a time to kill long ago, and then forgotten so I have read this series out of order. I was happy to be reintroduced to Jake now to go back and read Sycamore Row.

My copy of the book had printing and binding errors that made some sections hard to read but setting that aside, I feel luke warm about the whole thing. The buildup was prolonged with some good subplots forming but then everything was wrapped up neatly but unsatisfactorily in a few short chapters with most of the secondary plot lines not really developed. Overall it could have been much more than it was

I really liked this one better than some of his more recent weaker efforts. The book is riveting with great characters and a great story. My only complaint is that the ending is clearing setting up a sequel, but hard to quibble with that.
The series is now three novels long. 1 and 3 are 5 stars in my book. 2 is just ok but 3 is good enough to make it very worth reading.
I will start with saying, I have only ever read A Time to Kill by Grisham, so I’m not really familiar with his work as a whole apart from knowing he writes legal thrillers. I enjoyed revisiting the characters of this book, but just could not get into it. There was very little action and this book could have been scaled down quite a bit. Where was the editor? There was far too much telling and when Grisham actually did “show” it was about things that didn’t matter. I wanted more of Drew and Kiera. The court case is always the most fun part of a book like this, but it felt rushed to me. I could hardly say this book was a “thriller” so we’ll say legal drama? The story itself felt cliche and overdone as well. So there was a lot that didn’t work for me. I did finish though and while I have some major gripes, it wasn’t terrible, it was just incredibly average.
I had forgotten how addictive a good Grisham novel was.
Excellent characters, plot, pacing. You really develop a strong attachments to the hero(s) and a strong dislike for the villains.
The conclusion is very realistic and not Hollywood-esque.
Good book!
