3.75 AVERAGE

No one knows how to write a romcom like SEP. This premise is beyond wacky, and it's morally bankrupt. Jane decides that she needs a baby. But all her life, she's been plagued by loneliness, which she believes is that she's just too smart! When she sees Chicago Stars football player Cal on the TV, she says that loaf of a man needs to be her baby daddy. Jane then goes about getting herself impregnated without Cal's knowledge.

I am unsure if you could write this book outside of 1997, even if I'd love the words "baby daddy" and "himbo" to add to SEP's lexicon.

SEP is so clever about the morality of it all, the sex scenes,  and what happens when Cal learns he's impregnated Jane. Plus, how quickly Jane realizes that, yeah, both parents have rights to the child unless you signed them away beforehand.

For a book that easily could've been dark, SEP keeps the tone just right with moments of levity and shows our couple moving toward respecting, understanding, and ultimately loving each other. I cackled out loud when Jane punished Cal by taking all the marshmallows out of his boxes of Lucky Charms.

As in any SEP book, the rules change, and Jane and Cal find themselves in forced proximity. With his family! Cal's parents also have a great marriage-in-trouble B-plot, where they work out the foundational issues in their 40-year marriage. SEP really makes you believe that people can come together and that everyone in this little bit of fantasy romcom world ultimately wants to love each other.

September 2021: still got tingles

Reread @ July 2nd 2015

I WAS STILL FILLED WITH WILD EMOTIONS EVEN WHEN IVE READ IT MORE TIMES THAN I COULD COUNT

It was well-written and genuinely funny in parts; some of it had me laughing out loud, and I didn’t expect to find it as funny as I did. I liked both main characters, I thought they suited each other well. I liked that neither of them was quite what the other expected, and I liked that both of them grew past their preconceived notions about each other.

The ending
Spoilerwhere Jane ends up taking refuge with Cal’s mother and grandmother
was a highlight for me, I thought it was a really nice idea.

I did have issues with the book, though. So, the main focus of the plot is the thing I didn’t like. I know I’m not alone in that.
SpoilerJane tricks Cal into having unprotected sex with her so she can get pregnant, it works, and she tries to keep it from him at first.
It’s a bit weird to be saying that the thing I didn’t like about it was literally the entire plot, but I will say I liked the way their relationship went after he had forgiven her and they’d worked through things. He’s a bit harsh towards her at first, but I get it. The way she behaved was indefensible.

There’s a side story involving Cal’s parents which I just did not care about. I cared about the mother’s side, but that was it. I didn’t care about the dad. His dad was a d*ck, completely and 100%, and he didn’t deserve his wife. One flashback to their relationship really upset me
Spoilerthe wife got pregnant at 16 and he was 18; he went to university but never told his friends there about his wife and child. She surprises him one day with some biscuits and his friends make fun of her and he acts like he doesn’t know her and then walks off leaving her there with their baby. I just. I could not find any sympathy with him at all!

I would recommend it if you like secret baby romances with enemies-to-lovers tropes.

Bonkers plot but the banter and chemistry between the two MCs was off the charts. SEP has become a new fave author!

Yes, Jane was completely WRONG when she tricked Cal. But she spent the entire rest of the book feeling badly because of it.

I thoroughly enjoyed their story. It was fast paced and funny with fantastic secondary characters. What fun!
