I'd like to thank fanfiction and how convoluted fic schemes can be used to get pairings together. If it weren't for years of reading them, I don't think I would have been able to get past the ridiculous set up of this story.

I think that if not for the addition of Amber and Jim's relationship, this would be a 4-star book for me. Jane had a little too many strange thought processes and behaviours for me to totally understand and root for her. Like she was adamant that having a baby with a dumb man would make her baby less smart. I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure that's not how genes work. And Cal has that raging asshole quality that I'm noticing is a pattern in SEP books. The addition of Cal's parents was my favourite part of the book, as well as the entire cabin chapters. I love a good no-men-allowed the women are bonding arc. It felt so cozy and sweet.Safety Stats
1st couple
Jane
Virgin - no
What's Your Number - yes
Spoiler
Her past number of sexual partners is explicitly told to the audience at some point. She also has not enjoyed sex with anyone but with Cal.Cal
Playboy - no
Spoiler
I would say he is a reformed playboy. He had been celibate for a few months before meeting Jane. There were a few references to his past intimate partners - particularly the fact that Jane is the oldest woman he has been with. She didn't seem too hung up on his history, so I wasn't much either.Sex scene with OW - no
Cheating - no
OW drama - no
Overall, Safe.
2nd couple
Amber Lynn
Virgin - yes
Jim
Playboy - no
Spoiler
He is actually a virgin - only ever with Amber.Sex scene with OW - no
Cheating - no
Spoiler
Amber always suspected that he had at some point cheated on her. He admits that there was an almost incident years ago, but he didn't end up going through with it. He doesn't go into any detail about who this woman was, when in their relationship it happened, or any other gory details; only saying he made it to the hotel door before changing his mind. Because of the lack of definition in the visual images, it was fairly easy to forgive.OW drama - no
Overall, for me it's Safe, but it could lean towards Safe with exceptions depending on your personal feelings.

[MAY 2021]
I reread it with my beloved book club over the weekend and...... SIIIGH. This book is so good. It’s wild and funny and so touching.... I loved it even more this time. I’m bumping it up an extra star.
**
[FEBRUARY 2021]
keep dithering between 3 and 4 stars but honestly, I think this book is excellent. It deserves the fourth star.
Initially, the premise of the book was equally off-putting and intriguing, but in the end, it’s great. My favorite part about this book is that even though we see Jane away from her workplace for the majority of the book, it’s still incredibly clear that she’s a brilliant physicist, even if she has some..... lapses in her personal life.
Cal is a genuinely great guy and he actually deserves Jane. They’re a great match and I like that she sticks up for herself incredibly well. I think that dynamic was missing in the first two books in this series, where we have strong heroines who are only really subjugated by their love interests. Both Phoebe and Gracie (from the first and second book, respectively) are incredibly willful and clever with all the other characters they interact with, but get bullied by their boyfriends, a little bit. I didn't really see that dynamic with Jane and Cal which was a giant relief.
This book also sold me on the dynamics of Cal's family. The heartbreak between Amber Lynn and Whatever-Cal's-Stupid-Fucking-Dad's-Name-Is was palpable and made me incredibly emotional. And I absolutely melted when
Also... that last chapter was SO GOOD. I'm a sucker for babies. Sue me.
Anyways! As much as I'd love to move right to book four in the series, I’ve read, like, ten or eleven books this week and I think I need a break before my brain starts oozing out of my skull. I’m gonna kill a few brain cells playing Resident Evil, my currently reading shelf be damned.

(HER SCHEME TO GET CAL TO IMPREGNEGATE HER WAS SO FUCKING DUMB LIKE GIRL WHAT THE HELL?? It only works because [A] I love her and [B] Phillips writes it well enough that I buy her reasoning, if not the way she goes about it.)Cal is a genuinely great guy and he actually deserves Jane. Jane moved in with Annie and Amber Lynn and made herself part of their little female family group. I loved watching Amber's opinions on Jane change as she embedded herself in their family unit.Also... that last chapter was SO GOOD.

The last two paragraphs that serve as an epilouge of sorts for how Cal and Jane's baby is going to grow up was super clever and it made me emotional.Anyways!

Well.. ahm… I.. I found the characters and the storylines really strange. I was so excited to read a romance novel about a phycisist, but the way she acted, thougt and spoke just didn‘t add up.

“I’ve never heard so many wrong things consecutively in a row. “ That’s how I felt about this book at first. And then, someone, I got sucked in. This book is a ride for sure. But…
- All the language is grossly sexist my god. Like extremely. problematic.
- Have they heard of showing, not telling?
- This writing style is so juvenile my goodness.
- These are the least attractive descriptions of men that are supposed to be hot that I have ever encountered. This made me slightly less straight with every page turn.
- And YET. I did get sucked in somehow, against my will, by the last 1/3rd. And by the end I didn’t totally hate it. Although I did loathe many individual lines.
- This is definitely a book you have to completely suspend your disbelief for. And I cannot say I would recommend it to anyone.
- But, here we are. I finished it.
TW: Lesbian slur, pregnancy scheme, drinking, lack of consent/ bad portrayals of consent
Struggled with the first part as Jane using Cal just seemed so cold and illogical. Got better when the humour started to come in.
This was cute. I'm not a big fan of the manipulation and premise that sets up the marriage, but it's certainly better than a later one in this series, so I can get past it.
I really enjoy Jane once she gets past her dumbassedness. Cal took a LONG time to grow on me. I get why he was angry and upset, but even after that he was just a big doofus and honestly a huge dick.
I did like the side characters and the secondary love story going on.
