It started out really promising then it all went downhill from the point the hero found out about the heroine's pregnancy.
This is only 3 stars in comparison to other SEP titles. I'm never a huge fan of pregnancy stories -- accidental or pre-meditated -- and there's just so much to cringe over in this book. But in the end Jane and Cal are a pretty good pair.
The best part of this book, though, is the secondary couple. I appreciated the realism of a long-married couple unraveling under the strain of decades old resentments. But I loved the reconstruction of their relationship on the strength of their love and admiration for one another.

Another great read by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Jane Darlington is a brilliant physicist that desperately wants a baby. Cal Bonner is the Stars quarterback and the guy that Jane decides should father her baby. They each underestimate the other and their fears.
Reads like a Harlequin series novel, rather than a stand-alone title. Maybe a re-issue?

kind of thought I would've give it 3 stars at least, and half away through out the book, I changed my mind.
of course, the book has some cuestionable attitudes when it comes to the characters and their relationships, but since it was written in the 90s I already expected something along those lines and still tried to give it an opportunity. didn't work but I don't blame it on the decade it was written.
the relationship between jane and cal made me feel dizzy, like I couldn't feel them knowing each other and falling for the other, it just happened and then it got a little bit confused, somehow, I don't even know how to properly explain, I just didn't feel it.
one thing it called my attention were jim and lynn, cal's parents. they had their own story line, we had povs of them and even tho I didn't love them It was entertaining and somehow original to include them in the story. lynn may have been my fav character, not that she was spectacular, but I liked her. that's the reason why I would give this .5 stars lol

Dr. Jane Bonner grew up a freak (in her words.) She was beyond intelligent and it disgusted her father and gave her (more a less) a complex. For her children, she wants something different. She wants them to be normal. At 34, she is ready to have a baby with somebody stupid so that her children have a chance to be "normal." When a chance to sleep with Cal Bonner, quarterback for the Stars football team, comes up, she grabs it with both hands.
Cal only dates women in their early 20s. So when his friends hire a 28-year-old (he is told) prostitute for his 36th birthday, he doesn't expect to be intrigued. And he really doesn't expect to find out that she only slept with him for his sperm. He decides that his child won't be a "stray," forces her into marriage, and whisks her off to a tiny mountain town in North Carolina.
This book holds up surprisingly well and I think a lot of it is due to the humor that SEP injects into her stories but also the relationships she builds with her characters. Most of the story is Janie and Cal figuring each other out but there is a big chunk of Jane interacting with her mother- and grandmother-in-law and the relationships that these women build. Add in a B plot of Cal's parents rekindling their own romance and you have a story that even new readers will enjoy.
