Such VIVID writing - each character has such a distinct voice. I love a book that slowly unfurls motivations and back story that "makes it make sense." Great listen.

Just as good as it was the first time I read it.

I started off with the physical copy and switched to the audiobook halfway through and kept on alternating. The author narrates it herself and it was a stellar production. Added so much life into an already lively book. Highly recommend.

Such vibrant characters and so profoundly sad. A story of men are trash, let me count the ways. Beautifully written.

[Thank you to William Morrow Paperbacks for my finished copy, available everywhere now!]

The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives is a wonderful debut from African-born poet, Lola Shoneyin. Told via alternating perspectives, the novel focuses on how the lives of Baba Segi and his three wives become upended after the arrival of his fourth wife, Bolanle. The pacing moves along briskly and before you know it, we've reached the end of the book. An intriguing look at poly-amorous relationships in modern-day Nigeria, the inter family struggles and rivalries, and the complications women go through to find their place in the home, this is one novel you don't want to miss.

Unputdownable, tragically funny and calamitous. Shoneyin does a great job of laying bare the lack of regard and compassion society has for women who can’t meet societal expectations, or who chooses to reject them.
