finally an enemies to lovers that earns it but please i would love a map of fake germany
Gorgeously written, dark and haunting, romantic, at times. But why in the world are the main characters not trying to overthrow the colonizer? but wait, not just that, also helping him???
This book justified Lorelei actively rooting out sedition for tenuously held power over lands that were conquered by some guy because rebellion = war and assimilating = peace, maybe with some violence but ignore that part. Hmmm. The politics are no better at the end of the book vs the beginning for the Yeva who are racially segregated and used as scapegoats when it's convenient. Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I liked this book until the very end. I loved how folklore drove the story. The relationships between the characters were messy and complicated, making it an interesting train wreck at times. I also liked how the magic system worked. The book was well written and had some beautiful prose.
However…the politics were weird
The fact that everyone was just like “let’s side with the colonizer” was off putting. The main character’s reward for supporting the empower is that she gets to leave the Jewish ghettos. It’s an awkward choice for a supposedly happy ending. She literally spends all the book talking about how important her people and culture are to her and then is happy to work for a man who she knows will probably will turn on her people. Im guessing the author was aiming for a realistic ending, but it really tainted the book for me.

Dnf at 37%. The most boring book ever. I can’t understand the lore, nothing happens just pages and pages of non things , i don’t see how the 2 characters that are supposed to fall in love would even be a match!
