This book has stuck with me for months since I finished it; it is equal parts inspiring and convicting. The book calls White Americans in the 20th and now 21st centuries to be better, while honestly and vividly describing what they have done in their history (and how they benefit from it today). Honestly, I cannot do this book justice with my own words— so I won't try to.

I do not expect to live long enough to read this book in its finished form-- I want you to just watch and see if I'm not right in what I say: that the white man, in his press, is going to identify me with 'hate.' He will make use of me dead, as he has made use of me alive, as a convenient symbol of 'hatred'-- and that will help him to escape facing the truth that all I have been doing is holding up a mirror to reflect, to show, the history of unspeakable crimes that his race has committed against my race.

Few quotes hold more relevance and are more convicting in an era when books are being pulled from shelves and history is being left untold.

Amazing book, definitely going to have to look at more of his writings.

Wow where do I even begin. I first picked up this book over two years ago and am just now finishing because it's so long but I truly believe it's such an important book that everyone should read (especially now).

This is a pretty comprehensive retelling of his entire life and seeing his background, it really puts into perspective him being so (validly) militant. Almost everything he preaches about race I find myself agreeing with as true still to this day. It's so crazy how in the US history curriculum we only learn that he's "violent" when that's not the case at all. It's sad to see so much of what he fought for still not resolved and this autobiography serves as a great reminder that we all need to keep ourselves aware and educated.

Absolutely fascinating biography, jam packed with things to think about. Malcolm lived an incredibly passionate life, and Haley did masterful work keeping the book coherent and yet reflective of the obvious chapters of Malcolm's evolving life. This book was definitely a new vantage point for me on history, American culture, and race. I want to make people I know read this so we can talk about how it Malcolm's ideas reverberate into our here & now.
