More of a 4.5/5

Everyone should read this book. Everyone.
informative slow-paced

it took me 5 months to finish this book it that tells you anything about how riveting it is (not). i picked this up because i didn’t really know anything about malcolm x other than him being a popular speaker and figure during the civil rights movement. i didn’t know that around 300 pages of the book would be chronicling his religious journey in such a thorough, repetitive, and long-winded way. it truly started to read like a theology textbook in the second half. while i did learn more about malcolm x on a personal level, i definitely should have picked up a different book that provided more historical context and talked about what he actually did to reach such acclaim. i was under the impression that he took action in the civil rights movement but seems he just tried to get people to join his religion. i think people have only rated it so highly because it is the autobiography of malcolm x and not actually judging it based on its merits as a work of literature. i look forward to watching the movie to see if that provides more insight.

Turns out I didn't know much about Malcolm X at all. Vivid book that dissected one of the most interesting personalities in recent history.
