A great page turner. Less spooky than Silent Companions, but had a similar feel.

The book is well written and pleasant to read. The time it was written in was portrayed well and you get swepped up in the time. However, the first 300 pages were incredibly slow. Given; it does build tension but more in a: was that a hint? Why are they weird? Does something happen here? Oh, no. -type of way. Nothing actually happens.

The last 100 were in better tempo. However; the ending felt too explained to me. Some imagination would have been nicer.

I KNOW this is my first book of the year
I KNOW I need to be careful how many 5 stars I dish out

BUT

Mrs England was one of the most gripping, haunting, mysterious, and intensely fascinating stories I have ever read! The first novel I have read by Stacey Halls and I will most definitely be picking up some of her other novels as a result!

This book was entirely un-putdownable, it was totally unpredictable and I loved every second. The writing was beautiful - the first page alone blew me away - and the storytelling entirely captivating. I can’t fault it. The way Halls allows your suspicions to flit from character to character throughout - even making you doubt the integrity of the protagonist at one point - was enchanting and somewhat unsettling. She constantly makes you doubt what you think you know and never ceases to successfully turn your theories on their heads.

I loved this book so much! (Even more because I got the hardback sprayed edge version - so pretty

I enjoyed reading this book, with its historical settings. The mystery and mindset during the timeframe is beautifully protrayed.
