For my taste, this was a very slow read. Nothing happened in much of the book. I felt like I was reading slow fan fiction on Jane Eyer.

I feel a bit weird about this one. I flew through it partly because of its easy prose and rich historical setting, but I feel a bit put out by the final paragraph – it felt like a cheap attempt at ambiguity to make me question what's happened when the novel was simple and not requiring of it?

I've read The Familiars and The Foundling, both of which I enjoyed but felt like something was missing. This one was no different, so maybe me and Stacey Halls aren't a good match!

A story to fall in love with the characters. Beautifully written with mystery, secrets and intrigue. It's not a jam packed rollercoaster ride of a story, rather than a gentle merry go round. I enjoyed the subtle storyline and the background. I learnt about Norland nannies and their history. Very reminiscent of an Austin or Du Maurier novel, set in Edwardian 1904, mostly in West Yorkshire. I loved it ❤️
