Wow...
A book that’s left me emotional. This book was a true gift, an experience that’s left me in tears with grief yet with feeling of being understood. My story isn’t quite the same, however felt through her story a connection to my family’s own story. Made me reflect, the grief and emotional struggles of what my parents went through, what my grandparents were put through and what I’ve gone through, migrating twice.
This author blew me away, her narrative, her words, her beautiful storytelling that makes you feel every feeling there is to be felt.
5 stars and now off to read her other novels!!!!

A heartfelt story worth the read!

Though this novel might be on the shorter side, the words inside felt infinite. A story of love, loss, the terrors of be undocumented, and a story that resonates with my life. Being set in Colombia is the only difference from my own story, but those feelings transcend borders. The aching for a home while you are home. I don't think I can put words to a review that would do this book justice. It's a raw and real look into the lives of families split by borders and their laws. I drank in every word, bitter and sweet. I loved it.

I honestly didn’t love the writing in this book but the story was meaningful and rich. For some reason I wasn’t enthralled but I was invested. I have not considered these heartbreaks and challenges often, which is a definite result of privilege. I think the story in these pages is really impactful, I am glad I invested the time into reading this.

Beautiful exploration of the human experience, of a family divided, of community and of our connections to the land. Interwoven with folklore. Ending had me in tears.

3.5 stars. This was one of my Book of the Month picks and I had high hopes.

The story itself is very compelling as it’s about a family that is split between America and Colombia and all their attempts to reunite. I was also excited about this book because it is told from different points of view and whenever I read a description of a book like this I am always, “You had me at different points of view!!” But we are talking about five different points of view. And the chapters are relatively short so it felt pretty jolting to move through so many different viewpoints so quickly.

I really, really appreciate the story itself. The immense grief of calling two different lands home but having to choose one; the struggle with keeping a family whole through so much trauma and change.
