This book was good, but short. Listening to the audiobook at times made it hard to follow what was going on, because the timeline skipped around more than I would have liked it to. It's tragic at times, but absolutely compelling.
I want to rate this higher cause I liked the story but this somehow felt too long at just under 200 pages. The author repeats ideas a lot which felt like wasting time with so few pages. Full thoughts eventually

Infinite Country is a tense, moving story of family resiliency and the concept of home. Engel gives each character dimension and a unique voice as the story travels back and forth both in time and across borders.
Readers will encounter heartache, desperation, and ultimately, hope as estranged family members make difficult choices and then grapple with the consequences of those decisions. A brilliantly-crafted read that will hook you from the opening sentence.
TW: Graphic violence, animal cruelty, sexual assault/rape

A very emotional read about the life and struggles of an immigrant family. Parents trying to do the best for their family and is forced apart when it's found out they overstayed their visas. And the mother having to make a hard decision. It's an very important read showing that simple and in it's core it's human beings and we all do what we need to do to have a better life. But the book do contains rape, which I didn't know going in to it. So it's a difficult read but a good one.
What I liked: I did enjoy the book. It was a perspective on immigration and immigration laws in the US that I’ve never read before. I also enjoyed the snippets of folk tales from the dad (hence the art on the front of the book) I thought that was a nice tie in to the stories.
What I didn’t like: I could never really tell who the narrator was towards the end of the book. It also felt like the end of the book was really rushed. Honestly a lot of the book could have been explained better.
I’m rating this book about a week after actually finishing it. I read this while traveling so that could have influenced my rating and opinion of this book.
Read if: I do think this book is worth reading.

This was a lot of plot for such a short story- But if that's not a metaphor for life, I don't know what is.
This is such a gorgeously crafted book. Engel weaves such a unique story together by giving the reader a bunch of different perspectives on a family torn apart by borders. I think this was a bit of a slow burn but absolutely worth it!
