Wow. Reading this book after celebrating July 4th was truly the best timing. Recent current events have left many of us reeling and growing concerned about the future. This book was a reminder of what light can look like in the darkness. Cody Keenan, a speechwriter for President Obama, played a critical role in putting to words how to honor, recognize, and remember 10 difficult days for our country. In a West Wing-esque fashion, Keenan gave us a behind the scenes look at the Obama years and I found his reflections refreshing, inspiring, and hopeful. If you are like me and feeling a bit lost this book a great way to ground your thinking about what it means to be American.

This book, written by Obama’s, chief speechwriter is a fantastic reminder of what is happening in government that we never see. It was a reassurance that most public servants truly do their work for the betterment of other people. It gave me hope that the power is truly in the people of the US.

A really enjoyable read for anyone who enjoys a behind the scenes look into the White House. The optimism sometimes even smells of delusion but it is so persistent in all the stories of Obama staffers that I’ve read/heard, that I am starting to believe it.

Best Barack Book I’ve read, written by his chief White House speechwriter. The focus in on the 2015 Charleston AME church shooting and same sex marriage SCOTUS ruling.
