WHOWEE

I came for the creepy Stranger Things Vibes, but this book really didn't give what it needed to be gave.

This novel is more of a coming of age set in a small town. The themes of memory being malleable and prone to change depending on the person was an interesting idea to explore and it fit well with how Jake began to grow up. This was a quick read and I really enjoyed the ghost stories that Calvin told, whch link to his own trauma.

I will have to deduct a few stars because I was hoping that it was scarier and more thriller, but overall I was satisfied with this.

I definitely recommend it if you want summer-ween vibes.

This is one of the first coming-of-age stories I really enjoyed. The book is well written, with small foreshadowing to keep you interested and wanting to know more. The characters are likeable with interesting backgrounds, and how everything tied together at the end was really enjoyable and satisfying. Sometimes I found it hard when the main character was reflecting on more of his recent memories; I had a hard time connecting why they were related to what he then talked about in his childhood next. The beginning was a little slow but it picked up about a quarter of the way through and kept my interest throughout. A great, quick read.

"For the sake of who we were back then, and to make peace with who we've become now, with all our needful ghosts. Reality never changes. Only our recollections of it do."
Toronto author Craig Davidson takes us on a nostalgic journey to the days of youth, with Jake, Uncle C, and friends Billy and Dove creating the titular "ghost club" for an '80s summer.
This book is not so much about plot as it is capturing the feeling of growing up, of discovering fears and your place, connections, and learning about others.
It's got a Stand By Me feel to it, and also reminded me of Boy's Life by Robert McCammon.
The Saturday Night Ghost Club is graceful writing that isn't per se spooky, but embraces the season and coming of age. Just read it.
