This is one of those Legendary Books that I've tried to tackle a few times with minimal success.

When McCarthy died I figured "let's give the old bastards Big One another try"

Mostly describing the worst smelling people ever doing the most unimaginable, horrible shit. Felt cold. Felt almost alien.

Parts of it locked in really strongly with me (the stuff at the end after the whole Ferry operation falls apart was genuinely page turning and stomach churning)

Parts of it were barely literate. I guess I'll never get exactly what he's going for here but it felt like I was reading the kind of thing that had always existed and always would. The kind of story that digs deeper into what we're all way too afraid to actually talk about but we all know is true.

I like that the sorta-protagnosist mostly disappears for a large portion of the novel and he remains unknowable throughout.

The Judge yes scary yes fascinating yes I want to know everything about him yes yes yes.

Mccarthy's style really doesn't do it for me in a long-form story like this. It worked in 'The Road' because that book thrives off its minimalist description to create atmosphere, but here its just boring. Nothing really happens in the first third and I ended up getting bored.

I was going to force myself through it but decided life's too short. Disappointed after hearing such good things about it. Very dull and I just stopped taking it in.

Jesus Christ the biggest literary let down I’ve ever experienced. Been so excited to read this one for years and man it was so dull. So hard to follow, really confusing and lacking descriptions, the only saving grace keeping it going was the judge and that tells you all you need to know.
I don’t click with mccarthys writing style at all it’s too rambly for me and I rarely had any idea who was alive or dead or where they were or what the situation was. The ending was alright but yeah just super disappointing and boring. What a slog.

I just really don’t think Cormac McCarthy is for me. I didn’t hate The Road, but this one was so unengaging, from the lack of punctuation to the nameless characters. As someone with an interest in history and how America remembers its past, this book intrigued me at first but I was completely let down after starting it. I made it through the first chapter and found it not very compelling and difficult to get through, then thought I would give it a couple more chapters but gave up right after starting the second. I don’t think I will be reading any more of his books.
