I’ve had a massive vampire hyper fixation since watching Sinners, mainly picked this book up because of the cover art but I’m so glad I did.

Montoya rewrites the lore of the European Vampire. Vampires are created by making a deal with the Mayan/Aztec god of the dead Tecuani, the characteristics of vampires not being able to go out in the sun or crossing flowing water is explained by the gods own limitations!!! An insanely cool and refreshing take on their traits.

The relationship between the two main characters is compelling, we LOVE a badass vampire hunter FMC who falls for a quiet little scholar boy. I won’t say much else but definitely READ THISSS!!!

I had a feeling going in that I was really going to like this since it's full of all my favorite tropes and I had read and loved her book Sinner's isle before this. It definitely exceeded my expectations though because it had all the romance and angst I was hoping for, but it took me by surprise with just how intricate and creative she got with crafting her own vampire lore and cultural mythology! I thought it was a refreshingly different spin on vampires! What also took me by surprise and made the read so much better was that it would have been so easy to lean into the dark and dreary for the characters considering their situations in the story, but nope! Literally just two goobers trying their best to fight vampires and accidently oops-ing their way into love along the way. They were still badass and I still got the angst I was craving, but there were so many points where the characters got a genuine laugh out of me!
