This book continuously dipped between "oh yeah, I like this" to "it was okay". The world was exciting; it had a bit of that Vampire Diaries lore to it, where if you kill the creator, you kill its lineage, and I liked that aspect.

What I didn't enjoy was how draggy the last 40% got. There seemed to be scene after scene of action in fighting these vampires, when I feel it could've been more condensed in some areas. And the trip to the mountains to find the master vampire was so boring, I skipped over most of it.

I did like the world we were introduced to, and the scenes were usually so vivid that I felt like I was there with the characters, and while the origin of the story itself sounded amazing, I just wanted something more.

I expected to enjoy this book more than I did. The story had potential, but it was undermined by overly dramatic narration and a frustrating habit of having characters pause in the middle of battles or tense moments to launch into full-blown conversations—completely killing the momentum.

The plot centers on Lalo, who sets out to avenge his parents' death at the hands (or fangs) of the vampire Maricela, only to be turned into a vampire himself. Hoping to do better next time, he eventually crosses paths with Carolina, a vampire hunter who intimidates him from the start.

Carolina has been raised in a family of vampire hunters who don’t believe she can cut it because she’s a girl. Trained by her grandfather, she proves them wrong by becoming a skilled and determined hunter.

The dynamic between Lalo and Carolina is predictable and occasionally entertaining, but Carolina often comes across as unnecessarily abrasive, which made it hard to root for her. The ending is disappointingly cliché, and overall, the book reads like it’s aimed at a very young YA audience—despite its darker themes.

This was already a long book, but it needed to be doubled in length to flesh out all that it had going on. The pacing is way too fast so it can tackle way too much at once. Lalo was a meh MC and Carolina is a baddie but also a Mary Sue. I enjoyed it enough, but the romance was cringe.
