4/5. Even with a cliffhanger of an ending, I still found myself enjoying this book. I wish it was just a touch longer or more straightforward, but that might ruin the noir vibes of the narrative.
It lived up to the hype but good grief....that ending. I read this and Christa Faust's Choke Hold back to back and now I need a hug.

I got this as an ARC as part of the Goodreads first reads giveaway. Thanks for the great book!
I really enjoyed reading this, but my biggest complaint is that it's so short! I wanted to know more about the characters. It read more like a short story rather than a novel, and many things were left open. I liked the 'villain', I guess that's kind of a weird title for that character. Anyway, he was interesting and convincing as a bad guy.
I feel like some of the beauty of the language must have been lost during the translation but that also could be because it was not the final edit. Some parts felt a little choppy. Anyway, other than a few things, and the fact that I wanted more (which is almost a compliment in a way) it was pretty good.

An excellent book, with some of the best writing I've seen this year. Laconic but iconic, I thought. Character was outstanding; plot was outstanding; you never once lost sight of the quest. Imaginative and somehow poignant, without emoting. The translator has to be commended. It must have been very difficult to work on this and get the meaning because some of it reminds you of poetry in its brevity and pithiness. But it was haunting. Highly recommend this to book clubs as a source for a new reading experience.
I really liked this book even if it didn't connected very well with me, but I think is the Japanese style, I keep on reading Banana Yoshimoto and Murakami Haruki with the same feeling. Anyway the story is good but the plot isn't something particularly new. Ifo you love Japan and its rarefaction atmosphere, you can probably appreciate this thriller.(?)
THANKS TO NETGALLEY AND SOHO PRESS FOR THE PREVIEW

The critics loved it but I couldn't find a single well-written review. Then I read it and understood why. I think it loses something in the translation though.
