I already knew I loved Steven from her insightful, enraging duology The Exact Opposite of Okay and A Girl Called Shameless. So the standards were high, especially when I discovered that this was going to be an LGBT+ story. Luckily, from the moment t I picked up a sampler at YAlC, I knew I was going to love this story.
Unsurprisingly, I did and I flew through this hilarious, heart-warming novel about sexuality, identity and self-confidence.
Steven opens up these amazing discussions around consent and the ethical issues of science, particularly how far it should go. This culminates in a intense dissection of sexuality and watching Caro try to navigate all of this was fascinating, but also deeply relatable.
Speaking of Caro, I loved her as a protagonist so much. She reminded me of myself in her unbridled passion for a subject and confusion about herself, her friends and her lack of confidence in herself. I've been there and regularly still hit that point, so the message of self-love radiating from these pages is something that is sorely needed.
Then you have her amazingly three-dimensional cast of friends and love interests, all of whom are also trying to find themselves and navigate the murky waters of high school. In particular, I adored Keiko, the multi-hyphenate talent that just stole the scene every time and her genuine care for Caro. Every time, Steven creates such realistic teenagers, which is so good to see. Also, both of Caro's dads were brilliant characters, with Vati's witty humour perfectly balancing Dad's more stoic, quieter personality.
Yet again, Steven has cracked the code and crafted another smash-hit, thought-provoking YA that I will hold close to my heart. This needs to be read by so many people and I hope Caro's story will resonate with them as much as it did with me.

I picked up The Love Hypothesis because I needed an easy read that was funny and distracting, this book delivered exactly that! It was light-hearted, easy to follow and made me laugh. The pure absurdity of the plot, but in the best way possible, made me laugh a lot. Caro is a science nerd and I have great respect for the effort Laura Steven put into creating Caro's character, she is well crafted and knows her stuff. I like that we actually saw parts of her knowledge rather than just being told she was a science nerd. I also liked that this book broke down stereotypes a bit and did it's best to open doors outside of the status quo.
The stars of this book for me were Caro's dads, a very funny, comedic duo that had some of the best lines in the book. They had great chemistry (pun not actually intended) together and I really enjoyed seeing their dynamic with Caro. I don't think we see family relationships all too often in YA anymore, parents are more discarded to the side, so it was nice to get to know these two more.
This book focuses a lot on friendship and how we all change over time. I liked that the trio of friends didn't have to have the same interested to be friends and that's what made them click well together. I also think it looked at important issues such as what happens when you outgrow a friend, which is a sad truth. Relationships change over time and they take effort to maintain and this book presented this perfectly, I'd like to think it was more a story about friendship than romantic love...?
This book was cute and funny, which was exactly what I needed it to be. There wasn't a complex plot and it didn't fall down the predictability holes. I have to say though, the only reason I didn't rate it higher was that I found it all a little bit cringe towards the end. The way it ended felt a bit thrown together, so it didn't quite work for me. But the writing was super fun and has prompted me to buy more of Laura Steven's books, which I'm very excited to read!

I had SUCH a good time reading The Love Hypothesis, it was so wholesome, cute and funny!
I wasn't the biggest fan of the first half to three quarters of this book, but the ending absolutely made up for it. Props to the author for actually dealing with the implications of the premise.
I really liked The Love Hypothesis! At the start, I was just really confused about what was happening but once I read more I started to really connect to the characters. We follow Caro Kerber-Murphy, a 17-year-old girl living in South Carolina obsessed with science. She's super smart and is really into physics. But one thing she can't seem to figure out is the love hypothesis. Caro has some self-esteem problems and thinks she's not really attractive and just a very average looking person. She doesn't have the 'wow-factor' as her friends do in her opinion. She's also in love with Haruki, one of the popular guys. At one point she is quite desperate for his attention so she discovers this scientific breakthrough to make her more attractive. This has some interesting consequences.
I could relate a lot to the main character which made this book even better. But I didn't like everything she did and how she handled some stuff. But I guess that's just teenager behaviour which we all did when we were that age. I'm also a bit conflicted that the book is pitched as an LGBTQ+ love story even though this was only a really small part of the book. But oh well, we got some f/f romance and that's everything let's be honest. I also really liked the character development of Caro and how she became more comfortable in her own skin. That was beautiful to read.
I really recommend this book if you're looking for a fun, cute and quick read!
