it's six stars for me, it's part of my soul. 🤍

Listened to the audiobook. I did not love switching between the two different readers for this book.

Anime trope of Hoid saying “I know this is confusing, let me explain…” was hilarious and helpful. I loved the first 80% of the book then in true BrandySandy fashion all the action happened in the last 20%.  Overall I enjoyed it but was left still a bit confused and feeling “meh” at the end.

Wow, I dont think my review can accurately do this book justice. It was amazing in every sense of the word. It is fantastical and magical with some Manga-ness mixed It. There was a nod to AI "creating" art and what that could mean. And Sandersons postscript about his motivation and influences behind writing it was really good, too! This book is hopeful and emotional and all things amazing.

Woowwww!
This book is amazing on all fronts.

The narrative is unique because of the strong as well as witty narrator (Hoid) and the easter-eggs concerning Sanderson's work. This makes the book a special delight for people who have read some of his other pieces.

The storyline is well-developed, first concentrating on rather mundane stuff like the character's rather unusual jobs, the cultural, perceptive and moral differences between the characters and later on has a very enjoyable plot-twist in store.

The emotional depth of the character's struggles, feelings and faults is very well developed and makes one reflect on deep stuff.

There is some societal critic - or rather: some reflection-worthy points regarding our society and the defenition of progress - to be found in this book that invite further reflection.

There are so many layers to this book that make a finite review impossible. However, I do want to utter a huge recommendation for anyone. Please, for your own literacy-health, read this book.

I really enjoyed this book but mostly more so in the last half. While both characters ultimately ended up being likeable and great, Yumi started off rather annoying. She was very rigid, strict, and righteous. It made sense for her character but it was also tough to get through as it felt it dragged on a bit. That’s the reason mostly for it not being a 5 star read. This book hits a lot on empathy and appreciation for others - both in their imperfections and their mastery of their skill. Yumi and painter learn to appreciate the other and their duties. Yumi helps painter find his creativity again and release him from the disappointed of dashed dreams from his earlier youth. Painter helps Yumi experience life as an individual rather than purely as a service for others. They ultimately sacrifice for each other and the resolution feel earned. It’s a very interesting, creative world and the story is given many dashes of humor especially through the side characters and the narrator. I loved Hoid in Tress so I’m not surprised I loved him here as well. I have enjoyed every book so far set in the Cosmere universe and I hope Brandon Sanderson keeps writing them!
