The title essay is brilliant. This is a great book. I had to take my time with it though because so much of it is painful. But the spirit. It's astonishing and ultimately joyful!

Beautiful and moving and difficult in many different ways. Sarah Polley is such a tremendous writer, and I can see returning to this book in the years to come.

I don’t know that I can fully express how much this book meant to me. While so many of the specifics of Polley’s childhood (and adulthood) are radically different than mine, I was (am) also a precocious, imaginative, sensitive child that learned to ignore such impulses in service of something else that ended up being quite damaging. If we read to know that we are not alone, this book looked me directly in the eyes and said “I see you.”

I devoured this memoir. Sarah Polley is all the great things said about her. But she’s also so…Canadian. Her writing was so insightful and self-reflective, and she’s very careful to speak truthfully about others. Her life has been fascinating. I would love to have the opportunity to chat with her.
