I was loving how this book was turning up and then, BAMM! Utter nonsense crept in and ruined everything. Eeek!!! I am so disappointed at the ending.
Yay! Loved this one! This series is a little uneven, but worth the gamble, because the ones I love are really, really good. Such a great retelling of Sleeping Beauty. I loved the magical system in this book and Aurore is a great character. So is Oswald. Loved the way his story turned out. Yay some more!
Alas, not nearly enough Oswald. Which is, no doubt, an unpopular opinion. But I am a reader of Jane Austen: cousins marrying in a clearly old-fashioned setting doesn't really bother me. Especially when one cousin has longed for family and to belong his whole life and clearly thinks the other cousin is singular and remarkable. (See? Already more appealing than Austen.)
ALL THOSE TEARS WERE UNEXPECTED.
Honestly, if it weren't for the terribly slow beginning, I'd have given it 5 stars.

Second book of 2022 and at least we made progress with 1 star more then the first book, off to a great start huh.
Anyway, the confusion on my face when I started the last 10-5% of this book?? What the **. I was enjoying myself perfectly fine, okay some plotholes (like why on earth does Aurore do what she does without any further explanation from the author?), some missing characters, but still. Until this major plottwist happend and I kinda wanted to throw this book across the room and burn it. I’d also like to bleach my eyes/forget I ever read the last pages, but that’s next to the point.
Aurore is a spunky fun character with alot of whit, the family dynamics where enjoyable, the way it was written was loose and fluent, I even liked how it and did not follow the original story and the characters Autore meets on her adventure. And then it got al weird and went to shit.
I wanted to read the rest of this series but am to scared to do so now, so no thanks.

Cute! A lovely rendition of this classic fairy tale.
Usually, I love fairy tale retellings. This was the first book I read from this series, and it sadly is my least favorite. I really, really wanted to like this book, because I've always enjoyed the original tale of Sleeping Beauty.
There were only two things I truly enjoyed about this book: the character of Aurore and the beginning.
Aurore is what I wanted her to be: completely DIFFERENT from Disney's Aurora, who was a typical, pretty, prim and proper princess. Aurore was unique and quite likable. She liked garden work, and she wore pants! The beginning was quite nice, with the explanations about magic and Aurore's backstory.
The rest of the book, though, is very slow and 'draggy'. I was also quite annoyed with the fact that there were no fairy godmothers! The thing that irked me the most was the depiction of 'Prince Charming',[ who turned out to be none other than Aurore's FIRST COUSIN, Oswald! I understand that this is a retelling of an old story, but this is just a bit TOO much, especially for a modern YA retelling. The two are too closely related, and the fact that they get married is even worse.]
There are good books in this series- take Before Midnight and Wild Orchid for example. I am surprised that I even bought other books in this series after reading this one, but it seems that this is the only one which I didn't really enjoy. Cameron Dokey is an amazing author though, and she has some wonderful books, it's just that this one just didn't live up to my expections. SLeeping Beauty deserves better!

A sleeping beauty who doesn't sleep? An interesting concept but one that feels natural. It is a different spin on a classic. Well written and fun to read. If a little odd.
