It was okay, but has some serious problems, mainly with the characters.

The writing is actually pretty good, and the pacing was spot on and was ultimately what kept me reading, but the main character is just so stupid. It takes her forever to figure out the most obvious things, and I think it's because the author chose to reveal too much too quickly. I think she was eager to explain this world and set it up so she could prove she knew what she was doing, but it made everything extremely predictable. There wasn't a single surprise other than the deaths of characters, which weren't all that shocking. I don't think the front of the book should list what each dragon is the keeper of and I didn't find the map all that helpful. Knowing the Mirror Dragon was the keeper of truth just made everything super obvious which made it annoying that the character couldn't figure it out.

The author really holds your hand through the entirety, and it just made the book so much worse. I think 30% of it could have been cut, mainly the internal dialogue the character has with herself and the comparisons of events to previous events. It just really doesn't allow the reader to be tested or be smart because you're told who you can trust immediately and we're given every step of every little thing, and it just made it all seem forced rather than naturally impactful.

Overall, it was just fine. It held my interest and had an interesting concept, but I think it was poorly executed in the end. I won't be picking up the second book. Mostly because I just doubt Eona's going to get all that much smarter.

Holy crap this was so bad. So much potential wasted by poor writing.

I've never seen such complex ideas about gender identity and gender performance in a YA book. Hell, rarely even in adult books!

Just re-read this book and it was just as addicting as the first time through. Heavy on the mythology, which I loved and a great sense of adventure throughout. Complex characters were developed amazingly well and were my favorite part of the book.

What I loved:
* Diversity. Transgender characters, an Asian setting, disabled characters whose disabilities are actually recognized.
* DRAGONS.
* Lush descriptions and vivid imagery.

What I disliked:
* Slow pacing.
* A great beginning was followed by an uneven and boring middle.
* The plot never gripped me.
* The anticlimactic ending with too much of a Disney-feel to it.

Final verdict:
Eon is a good blend of traditional fantasy, with dragons and an amazing world, as well as welcome diversity and new twists. Ultimately, the characters and story didn’t sit well with me for some reason.

Quick review:

4.5/5 stars.

I really liked the amount of minorities representation there was in this book. We have two disabled people, a trans woman, black and asian people. Amazing. 12/10.

Eon (I'm calling her like this because it's confusing) is a really good main character because the writer knows her flaws. She can't run much, doesn't know how to ride a horse, when she falls it hurts a fucking lot and can't get up without help, if she kneels for too long her bad leg hurts too. The only little moments when she can do some of these things is because she is under the influence of a dragon, and I found it to be quite satisfying, because heroes usually get their flaws overlooked and ignored.

As of the story, I thought it was slow, but that wasn't always a bad thing. The problem, though, was that description sometimes were just too much for me. I'm not a native English speaker, and I had trouble following the landscape's description and fight scenes. It wasn't that much of a problem because I could kind of decipher what the book was trying to tell me and grab the general idea of it, but it slowed my reading a lot. Again, this might be just a matter of language.

I liked how it ended but I didn't love it, I would've preferred a big ending with a bomb dropping. I'm not going to say I would've liked people to die because that's not true but it was kind of disappointing to see nobody died????? All this stress and strong emotions over almost nothing?????

I want to see more of Kygo in the following book!!!!!! And also what happened to Dillon and Ido!!!!!!!! Please!!!!!!!!!!
