This book has the most AMAZING chase scene that takes place in Amsterdam!! That is what made this book ***** (5 stars). The rest of the book is good too.

I absolutely loved the build-up in this book and Alex's character development. I did not see the point of the prologue because I thought it was set in the present time, but the fact that Yassen and Alex's dad knew each other and were the men in the prologue was so clever!
Comparing it to the previous books, specifically the first one, there is obvious development in not only Alex's character, but also the plot the author is writing. There wasn't quite so much killing in the first book, if any, but I think that the fact that there were so many deaths gives us the idea that Alex's life is getting more dangerous and darker, too.

As I'm rereading this series, I'm reminded how violent these books are. I first read this book when I was 14 and it is sooooooo violent/graphic/aggressive for middle schoolers! I guess violence is so normalized and ingrained in everyday life in the US that it didn't phase me; that's a whole big issue that obviously goes beyond books. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . anyway, these teen spy books are good; they're fast-paced and funny with plot twists until the end, and they leave you cheering for the good guy teen spy underdog!
Ehhh. good action but the plot is starting to get annoying. Can't he write something less predictable?
This book was so good I could not put it down. I had planned only on reading a little bit and then switching to another book I needed to finish, but instead, I just read this entire book on and off.
I'm pretty sure that this is as far as I've ever gotten with this series. It's still very addicting, but somewhat repetitive, as it was just a rehash of the first book in the series. the "big reveal" about Alex's parents was predictable. Sabine's parent's taking this random schoolboy on their family holiday was very far fetched.
Do you find out Toby Stephens got cast as the villain in the second-best book of a series you cared a lot about when you were eleven and immediately drop everything to reread it, or are you normal?
