Another excellent addition to the Thrawn story. These books introduced me to a whole new Star Wars world outside of the movies and I’m thankful for them.

Only recommended if you are a huge Chiss fan or a true Thrawn completist

The Thrawn Ascendancy Trilogy by Timothy Zahn is a three part novel series set from prior to the clone wars all the way up to the first Thrawn book under the new canon.

The entire series, outside of a brief repeat of a scene from Thrawn Alliances, takes place entirely in the Unknown regions among the Chiss, their enemies, and scattered unknown regions worlds youve likely never heard of. Outside of a handful of new Jedi order references, the Essential Atlas (which had a chapter on the Chiss Ascendency), and some other game material, almost all of this is brand new lore created by Zahn…

Unfortunately, I don’t feel this new lore warranted a brand new trilogy. Thrawn is itneresting when he’s around non Chiss…and Thrawn Treason showed a situation where a human was working with an all Chiss crew, but just Chiss isn’t terribly interesting even if it does Re-introduce some old EU lore.

I honestly don’t feel that we get much of interest here that wasn’t already brought up in the first thrawn trilogy under the new canon…

A fitting end to the prequel trilogy that we didn’t know we needed or deserved, with some good Easter eggs about the High Republic and future possibilities of Thrawn and the Chiss.

I read the preceding books in this series last year, so it took a few chapters for me to remember what was going on and who all the various characters were, but once I had reached that level this was another enjoyable and engaging Thrawn tale.

The events and action are well written as are the characters, which all build to a satisfying conclusion to this enjoyable trilogy, as well as setting up the circumstances that lead into the Thrawn trilogy of books.

Seemed like a very long road to get to the end. Listening in audiobook, my attention was held, but those battles really dragged sometimes. It was okay, but didn't blow me away. I liked seeing Thrawn in his early days, less confident, prone to mistakes, but also gaining knowledge and leaning on others to confirm or expand his plans.
